Blogging is important for one big reason: SEO. Google enjoys fresh, unique content and rewards the sites that make continual, steady changes. Here are five easy steps to get your blog up and running seamlessly: (and if you don't want to read through, simply click on the video below where we give all the same info!)
1. Niche down
It seems counter-intuitive to narrow down your focus but believe it or not, it works. Niching down increases your chances of being discovered by your target market. There is a lot of competition out there so the more you niche down the more you stand out from all the rest.
2. Come up with a unique but fitting name
We did a Wix DesignHer episode on how to name your business. The same rules apply when choosing your blog name. You can watch that episode here.
3. Plan your content
How often are you going to blog? Once a day, week, month? Figure out a time frame that works with your schedule. Then write those dates in your calendar! This keeps you accountable and on track for staying consistent with your postings.
4. Create your content
This is the biggest stumbling block when it comes to blogging for most small business owners. What should you write? Here's a trick that will help keep the overwhelm to a minimum. Sit down for 30 minutes to an hour and brainstorm 25 topics in your industry you could write about. Once you have those topics, write a headline for each one making sure you use your keywords. Going through this exercise will give you two blog posts per month for one year! So be sure to take the initiative to sit down and work on this exercise.
5. Promote!
You've put all this work into creating your blog, now you need to get the word out! Utilize your social media channels and link back to your blog post. Send out an email blast (we like to use Shout Out) to your list and subscribers. Guest blog for other bloggers in your industry and drive traffic back to your site. Don't just hit publish and let it sit there!
